we wished it was New York

a warm summer evening
he picks me up at the driveway and the doorman greets goodbye
we go up to north babylon and roll a blunt behind a mc donalds
it's september 2
she's got the longest, most beautiful hair
and she says it's not summer anymore
these winds are the winds of change
nothing's going to be the same now

we drive back after i tested manual
i don't want to smoke or drink cause i'm scared
i'm terrified of evening chaos
and the possibility of returning in a couple of hours
to the life that has me trapped
between the sheets
 even before
my summer was gone

#74

i don't like dancing,
but i do enjoy a good stretch
letting my hands get closer to heaven
maybe if i fold down deep enough
if i tuck my navel in and draw the heart towards the knees
i'll discover the space between the breaths
that i have been missing.
how does that look for a night in?
i wish routine was mine to define

there's a new color in the sky
space black mixes in with milky white lights that flicker on and off at midnight
a goodbye, lost in reverie
it will never be dark enough
to swallow the bolts of thunder,
it might be clear enough to torment us another day.
just then you asked
if i felt something had changed
there's a new air rising,
you said
i peeped through the curtains and there's people outside
